Disease did not suddenly appear in the heavy industrial areas of Staffordshire and Worcestershire known as the Black Country with the advent of the Industrial Revolution. Prior to this the area was still blighted by disease and illness.

This is the first is a series which traces the history of disease and illness in the Black Country, and explores the impact of diseases including: leprosy; plague; syphilis and gonorrhoea, and flesh eating disease.
