Some of my Islamic and early medieval tools from my display at The Viking Festival 2015 |
With the fall of the Roman Empire in Europe, came the Dark Ages. Western Europe broke down into small territories run by feudal
lords. Medical development came to a halt, and medical knowledge became dominated by religious and superstitious beliefs
. Evidence of this remains in the Saxon medical or laece (leech) books which still exist.
But in southern Spain, North Africa, and the Middle East, Islamic scholars were translating Greek and Roman medical records
and literature and new medical advances were being made
Discover how Saxons - and Vikings- treated illnesss and wounds, the herbs they used and the religious and superstious
beliefs which dominated their beliefs.
Compare them with the advances made by Islamic physicians and surgeons and how both treated illness and wounds.
Inciudes a display of healing plants, religious items and Islamic surgical and medical instruments.
